4th Win For McCormackJun 23, 2008

 LOVELL SETS FAST TIME-WINS DASH06-21-08-cd1-054.jpg

Saturday night brought 16 cars to the AIRPORT AUTO BROKERS LATE MODEL race, sponsored by LAWRENCE ELECTRIC. Mike Lovell set fast time of 12.081, Noel McCormack jr 12.175, Jeremy Hopkins12.229, Dan Knight 12.245 and Charlie Collins in his newly purchased Red #69 qualified 5th with a 12.306

The top 6 cars were lined up for the trophy dash according to card draw.” Lucky” Lovell drew an ace for the pole; Hopkins drew the deuce for the outside pole position. I t looked like the inside groove was the place to be, that proved true for Lovell who took the lead on the start and never let up. Lovell won over McCormack 2nd, Hopkins 3rd, Collins 4th, Knight 5th and Sean Caturegli 6th.

06-21-08-cd1-104.jpgThe main event lined up with a 12 car invert and Allen Gibney started on the pole with Forrest Kuecker on his outside. Up 3rd was Bill Binns then Kevin Ostern rounding out the top 4. On lap 13, the first of 8 yellows came out and Binns took the lead from Gibney who led the first 12. The second yellow was pulled out on lap 15 for Mike Swaney and Mike Bourbon in turn 3, right in front of the leaders. The leaders checked up and Lovell had nowhere to go, his black #75x sponsored by All In One Tires was done for the night. Lovell had looked as if he was one that could beat McCormack’s 3 win streaks, but not this time. Collins and Eric Williamson retired to the pits for the evening. The field was restarted with Binns in the lead and Jim Stillman 2nd, Gibney 3rd, Caturegli 4th   and Hopkins rounding out the top 5. Hopkins, who started 9th in the beginning, also seemed to be another contender for breaking McCormack’s’ streak. That wasn’t meant to be as the 3rd yellow 06-21-08-cd1-118.jpgcame out on lap 23 for Hopkins in his # 15J machine sponsored by Hopkins Construction as he experienced engine failure and was done for the night. With the fast competitors falling out, on the restart we saw McCormack in the top five, Ostern 4th Caturegli 3rd, Stillman 2nd and Binns still in the lead. The 4th yellow came out for our newcomer, Berndt Ackerston in the blue #37 sponsored by North Counties Development. Ackerston was able to restart in the back of the field. The restart on lap 30 had Binns with the lead, followed by Ostern who just took 2nd   from Stillman in 3rd, McCormack in 4th   and Caturegli rounding out top 5. Ostern started challenging Binns for the lead on the restart and over took him on lap 33.On lap 34 the 5th yellow came out for Caturegli, who had been running in the top 5 most of the night. After a trip to the pits, he was lined up at the back of the field. This once again bunched up the field, and McCormack was 3rd behind Binns with Ostern in the lead. The sixth yellow came out for Jarred Beddow on lap38. The field was restarted with 12 to go and McCormack in 2nd and looking for his 4th win of the season. The 7th yellow came out for Kuecker, the 8th and final yellow on lap 45 for Swaney.   On the lap 42 restart, Ostern left the inside groove open just enough for McCormack to slide by. McCormack took the lead from Ostern and led the next 8 laps. This is his 4th win of the season for 4 in a row.06-21-08-cd1-161.jpg

McCormack wasn’t the fastest car, but saved his equipment for the end, and he was sharp on the restarts. With 8 yellows it gave him the edge. Ostern, who had a fast car and finished 2nd, said after the race” When I left the bottom open and McCormack got under, I knew it was a mistake.” Binns, who led 20 laps, finished 3rd, Stillman 4th, and pole sitter Gibney rounded out top 5.

3rd win for Noel McCormackJun 03, 2008

Bill Binns wins the dash; Noel McCormack goes for 3 in a row

What a difference a week can make! Warm blue skies and everyone ready to race. Just 5 days ago it was overcast rain and a long weekend full of racing die hard fans. This week they and the racers were back and ready to do it all over again.

Binns wins the Trophy Dash16 cars qualified for the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model / Affordable Auto Body 50 lap main event. Noel McCormack set a new track record fast time of 12.012, Kevin Ostern 12.277, Mike Lovell 12.294, Jeremy Hopkins12.295 and Forrest Kuecker rounds out the top 5 with a 12.385.

The 6 car 6 lap Fast Trophy Dash had Bill Binns, the 6th qualifier, starting on the pole and Ostern on the outside. Last week, the outside groove was where you wanted to be but not this week. Binns grabbed the lead from the start, the inside groove worked for him and he won over Lovell 2nd, Kuecker 3rd, Ostern 4th, Hopkins 5th and McCormack last.

The 16 car 50 Lap Main Event got off to a late start with only 25 minutes to run 50 laps. Due to the hard work of Mike Doss and Dan McIntire, who coordinated the track staff and  gently “encouraged” the racers,  and Kelly Coburn on the flags  keeping the show moving along, the race finished up just about curfew time.

Collins on the hookJim Stillman Jr, the 10th qualifier, started on the pole and Sean Caturegli on the outside. Lining up in 3rd was Kevin Estep in a borrowed ride and Binns rounded out the top 4. Stillman got the lead on the start. On lap 7 the first of 5 yellows came out, this one for Dan Knight’s single car spin in turn 1. At the restart, the second yellow was out for Charlie Collins, who hit the turn 4 wall hard, and who was uninjured. The same couldn’t be said for his red # 69 Cool Helmet Estepsponsored by Lakeport County Car Audio & Security, it was done for the night. The 3rd yellow was THE BIG ONE, 3 cars tangled in turn 4. Jeremy Hopkins drove into the pits dragging the front of his car. Hopkins, sponsored by Hopkins Construction, was unable to return. Binns was also forced to pit but was able to put his blue #33, sponsored by Furia Construction, back out on the track. Ostern was put on the hook and his newly numbered 36 was done for the evening. Single file restart; lead by Stillman, who has kept his lead from the start, was followed by Caturegli, Estep, Lovell and Jarred Beddow making his way to the top 5. The 4th yellow came out for Estep’s spin in turn 1. The field restarted with 35 laps to go and Stillman is holding the lead, Lovell moved up to 2nd, followed by Beddow, McCormack and Kuecker. The Big OneThe 5th and final yellow came out on lap 20 just after Lovell passed Stillman for the lead. Stillman in his blue #39 had held the lead for 20 laps and you could hear the Stillman fans and family cheer him on all the way in the pits. At the final restart, Lovell was in the lead, Stillman 2nd, McCormack, Beddow and Kuecker rounding out the top 5. The next 10 laps, showed the top 5 battling for positions. By lap 30, Caturegli and Binns moved into the top 5. On lap 37 McCormack took the lead from Lovell and Stillman was back in the top 5. With 10 to go, McCormack put a few car lengths between him and Lovell while Lovell was left to hold off Beddow and Caturegli, who was putting some pressure on him. 5 laps to go, McCormack and Beddow had a few lappers between them and Beddow Caturegli and Stillman. McCormack & Kelly meet againMcCormack wins followed by Lovell, Beddow, Caturegli, Stillman, Kuecker, Estep, Binns, Gibney, Williamson, McLean and Bourbon.

All top 5 finishing cars were sent to tech for inspection and passed. Mike Doss has implemented a clause on his 1 page Late Model Rules that states “weight may be adjusted to ensure level competition among cars.” Noel McCormack Jr, with 3 first place wins in a row, will be adding 100 lbs weight to his car.
