Mike Lovell Wins the Racin’ For a Cure Main Event

Last week Lakeport Speedway and David Furia hosted the Kelseyville Lumber – Deake Lyndall 2oth annual Memorial Race, and the Airport Auto Brokers Late Models were happy to have them. The Racin’ For A Cure team was very gracious. Derek Thorn, a Lakeport native, took time to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fellow racers and fans alike. For the Kelseyville Lumber- Deake Lyndall Memorial late model race we had 17 cars qualifying, including Derek Thorn in the #80 machine owned by Mike Doss and Noel McCormack in the 39x car. Even Airport Auto Broker Late Model promoter Mike Doss got in on the action and took a turn behind the wheel of Stillman Racings blue # 39.

Mike Doss has started a 6 lap slow dash for the 6 slowest qualifying cars. The idea behind this is to assist struggling teams to be more competitive by giving them more track time under race conditions. First and second place wins a track tire sponsored by Taxtec and Nitro Racing. Allen Gibney won the slow dash.

Derek Thorn Set fast time for the night and won the trophy dash from his pole position.

The main event was fast paced with only 2 yellows in the 50 laps. The first yellow came out for McCormack, who spun out in turn 4 which set him back for the rest of the evening with a flat tire. The second yellow was out for a few cars in the infield, one of which was Mike Doss with a flat tire; he watched the rest of the race from the infield. Bill Binns led the first 24 laps from his pole start. On lap 25 Mike Lovell in #75 took the lead with Derek Thorn close behind. Lovell and Thorn used the high groove to get around Binns. The next 25 laps saw the leaders weaving through lap traffic, which kept everybody on the edge of their seats, judging by the fan noise coming into the pits. Lovell was able to hold onto his lead followed by Thorn, Binns, newcomer Eric Graham and Caturegli.

Lovell is going to look great in his one of a kind special event jacket. Numerous Late Model drivers donated winnings to total 2,000 towards the ALS cause.

Airport Auto Brokers Late Model’s next race will be on Hot August 2nd.

See you at the Track
