Bill Binns wins the dash; Noel McCormack goes for 3 in a row
What a difference a week can make! Warm blue skies and everyone ready to race. Just 5 days ago it was overcast rain and a long weekend full of racing die hard fans. This week they and the racers were back and ready to do it all over again.
16 cars qualified for the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model / Affordable Auto Body 50 lap main event. Noel McCormack set a new track record fast time of 12.012, Kevin Ostern 12.277, Mike Lovell 12.294, Jeremy Hopkins12.295 and Forrest Kuecker rounds out the top 5 with a 12.385.
The 6 car 6 lap Fast Trophy Dash had Bill Binns, the 6th qualifier, starting on the pole and Ostern on the outside. Last week, the outside groove was where you wanted to be but not this week. Binns grabbed the lead from the start, the inside groove worked for him and he won over Lovell 2nd, Kuecker 3rd, Ostern 4th, Hopkins 5th and McCormack last.
The 16 car 50 Lap Main Event got off to a late start with only 25 minutes to run 50 laps. Due to the hard work of Mike Doss and Dan McIntire, who coordinated the track staff and gently "encouraged" the racers, and Kelly Coburn on the flags keeping the show moving along, the race finished up just about curfew time.
Jim Stillman Jr, the 10th qualifier, started on the pole and Sean Caturegli on the outside. Lining up in 3rd was Kevin Estep in a borrowed ride and Binns rounded out the top 4. Stillman got the lead on the start. On lap 7 the first of 5 yellows came out, this one for Dan Knight's single car spin in turn 1. At the restart, the second yellow was out for Charlie Collins, who hit the turn 4 wall hard, and who was uninjured. The same couldn't be said for his red # 69
sponsored by Lakeport County Car Audio & Security, it was done for the night. The 3rd yellow was THE BIG ONE, 3 cars tangled in turn 4. Jeremy Hopkins drove into the pits dragging the front of his car. Hopkins, sponsored by Hopkins Construction, was unable to return. Binns was also forced to pit but was able to put his blue #33, sponsored by Furia Construction, back out on the track. Ostern was put on the hook and his newly numbered 36 was done for the evening. Single file restart; lead by Stillman, who has kept his lead from the start, was followed by Caturegli, Estep, Lovell and Jarred Beddow making his way to the top 5. The 4th yellow came out for Estep's spin in turn 1. The field restarted with 35 laps to go and Stillman is holding the lead, Lovell moved up to 2nd, followed by Beddow, McCormack and Kuecker.
The 5th and final yellow came out on lap 20 just after Lovell passed Stillman for the lead. Stillman in his blue #39 had held the lead for 20 laps and you could hear the Stillman fans and family cheer him on all the way in the pits. At the final restart, Lovell was in the lead, Stillman 2nd, McCormack, Beddow and Kuecker rounding out the top 5. The next 10 laps, showed the top 5 battling for positions. By lap 30, Caturegli and Binns moved into the top 5. On lap 37 McCormack took the lead from Lovell and Stillman was back in the top 5. With 10 to go, McCormack put a few car lengths between him and Lovell while Lovell was left to hold off Beddow and Caturegli, who was putting some pressure on him. 5 laps to go, McCormack and Beddow had a few lappers between them and Beddow Caturegli and Stillman.
McCormack wins followed by Lovell, Beddow, Caturegli, Stillman, Kuecker, Estep, Binns, Gibney, Williamson, McLean and Bourbon.
All top 5 finishing cars were sent to tech for inspection and passed. Mike Doss has implemented a clause on his 1 page Late Model Rules that states "weight may be adjusted to ensure level competition among cars." Noel McCormack Jr, with 3 first place wins in a row, will be adding 100 lbs weight to his car.
